Ploes (Sea Routes)

Ancient Greek authors used the term “Cyclades” to describe a group of small islands in the Aegean Sea, which altogether form a distinct circle. Around 3000 BC, an important civilization flourished on these islands, mainly due to their mineral wealth (emery, obsidian and marble) and trade. The Cycladic idols which adorn museums worldwide are an example of the magnificent material remains of this civilization. The game is divided into playing stages. In stage one (collecting), players travel through the Cyclades gathering raw materials (olives, grapes and wool). In stage two (processing) they visit olive presses, wine presses and looms, where they will turn these goods into olive oil, wine and textiles. In stage three (commercial) they need to distribute their products throughout the islands, being careful to avoid the pirates who lurk all over the Aegean! In the game’s final stage (creative), using marble, obsidian and emery, players create a beautiful Cycladic idol! A fantastic adventure in the Cyclades which will make you want to know more!

The “PLOES” logo was designed for one of the largest exhibitions ever organized, held by the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens (N.P. Goulandris Foundation) during the Cultural Olympiad (Athens 2004). The exhibition was realized through the collaboration of nine countries (Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon. Syria, Italy, Vatican City, Malta, Spain and Turkey) and 92 museums. The logo is the creation of the director of the Museum of Cycladic Art and is used with permission.

The box features an excerpt from the Nobel Prize winning work Axion Esti by the late Odysseas Elytis, a poet who praised the beauty of the Cyclades like no other! It is used with permission.

The 6 Cycladic idols which are featured in the game are in the collection of the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens. Their actual location in the museum’s galleries is provided.

A pamphlet with a concise history of the Cycladic civilization is included.
